Break out your character sheets and 20-sided die. One might say that the foundations for the Expanded Universe (now Legends) started in the role playing games (RPG’s). Writers started establishing the rules of the Star Wars Galaxy, creating new characters and new story lines for the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Similar to how younger children created their own adventures with the action figures, older kids established their adventures in a more sophisticated (some might say more complicated) way.
Companies like West End Games (1987 – 1999), Wizards of the Coast (2000 – 2010) and currently, Fantasy Flight Games have published volumes of Star Wars source material for these games. Some of the more famous Star Wars authors cut their teeth doing writing for these RPG’s, before having one of their novels published. Needless to say, the RPG’s are a big part of the Star Wars galaxy and how it has developed. Dave Filoni’s Clone Wars and Rebels are full of references to the RPG’s.
